Your assistance helps us handle your and other patients’ appointments expediently so we do not keep patients waiting and our doctors and therapists use their time efficiently. Common causes of erectile dysfunction
The most common cause of erectile dysfunction is simply the effects of getting older. In the same way that people lose muscle strength as they age the tissues in the penis lose their function. And just as one can build muscle mass one can also stimulate the penis to regrow blood vessels and nerves.
Erectile dysfunction often goes along with stress, poor diet, excess weight and conditions such as diabetes.
Most men with diabetes experience ED along with diminished sensitivity. ED caused by type 2 diabetes generally responds well to Dual-action SONICWAVE. ED for men with type 1 diabetes is more challenging to treat and should be addressed as early as possible.
The above causes generally result in what is termed vasculogenic ED. Then there are causes that are partly physical and partly psychological. These are:
- Neurological disorders – The common neurological disorders include multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord or other nerve injuries from stroke and prostate surgery.
- Hormone supplementation – Steroids, increased prolactin, abnormal thyroid hormone levels, and low testosterone contribute to erectile dysfunction.
- Pornography – Men who use pornography to masturbate sometimes find that lovemaking in person does not stimulate them adequately and they find it challenging to get and maintain an erection.
Getting worried about an erection or performance anxiety can make it more challenging to do so. Men who have remained celibate until they get married or meet their bride for the first time in arranged marriages quite often experience anxiety about their ability to provide sexual satisfaction, which in turn leads to premature ejaculation along with erectile dysfunction.
Many common prescription drugs have the side effect of erectile dysfunction. The drugs include blood pressure medications, anxiety and depression drugs and cancer treatments. If ED is a side effect you should ask us about consultation and treatment options.
