Why are Sperm Counts Declining?

Award-winning environmental and reproductive epidemiologist and professor of environmental medicine and public health Shanna Swan, Ph.D. discusses studies on the effects of chemicals such as phthalates and bisphenol A on men and women’s reproductive health and children’s neurodevelopment. Her recent book “Count Down” examines how our modern world is threatening sperm counts, altering male and female reproductive development, and endangering the future of humanity.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common problem among men and is caused by disruptions during development or in adulthood. Certain hormones, such as androgens and estrogens, play an important role in the development of the penis and in the process of getting an erection.
